On Monday, July 8th, Secretary Pompeo create the Commission for Human Rights. The panel will have up to 15 members, that range from philosophers, expert, and lawyers. The commission is to give advice on human rights moving forward on strategic action and policies. Pompeo says his commission "ensures that human rights discourse not be corrupted or hijacked, or used for dubious, or malignant purposes.
Human rights advocates warn the worst humans rights abusers have trouble seeing their actions as abuse but as necessary. This group could be seen as self-regulation and a tool to fool the public into thinking abuse accusations are invalid. Another fear is that the committee under the Trump Administration could narrow LGBTQI, woman's, and religious rights.
